Default Not enough room for tire chains on my HDS3225! Help!

Ok guys here is the problem I have a hds3225 it is a great tractor however I went to install a set of chains on it only to realize that there is not enough clearance between the "wings" on the fuel tank and the top of the tire it also looks like the tolerance is pretty close between the inside of the fender well and the side of the tire. The tires that are on the tractor now are the factory size at 24x10.5x12. I have noticed that you cannot even find that size anymore. Has anyone else run into this problem and does anyone have a tire size that they run on their 3225 that will fit chains. I have looked at either 23x10.5x12 or even a 23x9.5x12 but I was wondering if they would fit my factory rims with no problems. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Quick tire lesson. On these tires, the first number represents the overall height of the tire. Second number the width, and the third the rim size diameter. All numbers in inches. So, a 23-10.50X12 will fit, and assuming the rim is 8.50" wide, (there's a good chance it is) you can go down to a 23-8.50X12. The narrower you go, the shorter the tire will be because it has to spread out to accommodate the rim. Tires are usually mounted on a narrower than they are rim. If you want less "ballooning" you run a narrower tire on a wider rim and so on. (Hope that makes sense.) So, there are a lot of different sizes that will go on that rim, and if you go to a 23-10.50X12 instead of a 24 it will get you a little clearance. If you go to a 23-8.50X12 it will give you more. Most of us here have older cubs, maybe there will be someone on here who has put chains on one of these. As far as what to go with, I don't know.

Cub Cadet knew of a issue shortly after release for a too close to the frame and was replacing these wheels at no charge at that time with offset ones. I do not know if they still have that program. Now this dose not effect the height of the tire chains rubbing, just the inside clearance. You may try cables or a lower profile tire as mentioned.

http://www.millertire.com/categories/lawn-garden-tires/

Maybe you could use something like a 23 X 9.5 X 12 turf on it with chains. I'd call Miller and try to find out what they think.

EDIT

Call Patton or Cub Classics and find out if the have a set of wheels and tires off something like a 2135, they are 20 X 9 X 8 pretty sure they would bolt on your tractor.

Thanks guys that helps alot. Everyone is always a big help on this forum. Special thanks to JMECH, I was pretty sure that is how the tires were listed. I am thinking that I have 8.5 inch rims also. CCPULLEN, I had heard that rumor also however the local cub dealer didnt know and wasnt really interested in finding out. LOL. SAM MAC I will check into the miller website looks like they are a little cheaper for the tire just have to check on the shipping prices, I had found a website that was pretty helpful also with the sizes because it gave the actual dimensions when it was mounted on the rim. I was looking at these

http://www.petestirestore.com/Carlis...-Ply-p672.html

The only thing that concerned me was when I went below a 10.5 inch wide tire the web site said the recomended they be mounted on a 7" wide rim. Can I mount a 9.5" tire on a 8.5" rim? I am also assuming that the dimensions listed on the website would be wrong if I did mount it on a wider rim because the tire would be shorter and more spread out? Thanks again for all the help.

You should be able to get the 9-1/2" tire on an 8-1/2" rim you may want to go with tubes also. I'm not sure that these will be small enough to allow you to get chains on. They have a 23.6" OD. Just my 2 cents but I'd look for a set of used wheels and tires of something like a 2135, put chains on them and just keep them for winter work. Fill them with rim guard and hang some weights off the back of the tractor. These should be around a 19.5" OD.

To bad you didn't live closer. I have a set of turf tires and rims that came off of a 2185 that I would give you just to get them out of my hair. They are 4 bolt pattern and are 23x9.5x12.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
