Default Hydraulic Fluid Questions

I've heard that I should use only Hy Tran fluid in my 1872. When I look further, I find Hy Tran is no longer available and has been superceded by Hy Tran Plus and Hy Tran Ultra. To confuse the matter even further, I'm reading about "MS-1209" standards; JI Case 1204-07/09 Specs.; ASTM DF1401 tests. etc.

Am I over-thinking this? I guess it boils down to: What hydraulic fluid should
I use and where to get it?

I just bought this tractor and it's my first. I want to drain and refill the hydraulic system. What's the best (easiest?) way to do it?

Thanks,
Russ

Russ:

HyTran-------->HyTran Plus---------> HyTran Ultra are all the same except improved formulas.

Get the HyTran Ultra and you will be fine.

If you want to buy it at your cub dealer, you need to buy "Hydraulic Transmission Fluid". Same stuff. Different name.

Is there any Hy-tran that is synthetic? If so, is it good or bad for the tractor?

I don't think they offer a synthetic version. HyTran Ultra is probably the best they've got.

My dad has always used Schaeffer Oil #315 Simplex Supreme. It is a synthetic blend and meets the Case IH specs B-6 (Hy-Tran), MS-1207 (Hy-Tran Plus) & MS-1209 (Hy-Tran Ultra).

The stuff is a bit tough to get as the company seems to cater to commercial accounts, and doesn't care about putting their products on the shelf at Wally World. You need to find an online dealer and mail order it usually.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
