Question Map gas torches?

So occasionally I need to bend some metal or possibly break free a fastener, but I don't need heat enough to warrant the purchase of an acetylene rig. Will a map gas torch get hot enough to do what I need? You know, the ones like the propane torches, except with a yellow tank. ( I think )

Thumbs up

For the similar applications I had, a map gas torch works great. Also, as a paint prep tool.

Interesting topic, I will be following this.

So, to bend something as say a lift rod for a front blade, a propane torch won't get hot enough?

A mapp gas torch doesn't get any hotter than a propane. If you guys need to heat metal to the point of "red hot" you will have to get a mapp/propane/acetylene; oxygen combo torch. Mix any of those 3 gasses with oxygen and it is the same result. Propane and Mapp gas are just less volatile gasses and thus considered "safer".

I see I see. So what is the benefit of getting a mapp gas torch versus a propane torch?

Like I said, it's supposed to be a little "safer" of a gas. It's also supposed to be a little cheaper. Mapp VS Propane, not much difference at all. Couple degrees hotter. Not really any "benefit" at all AFAIC. I've used all the gasses. Propane, Mapp, Acetylene torches. I'll keep my acetylene. It's way hotter of a fire.

If your really curious, google it.

Here's a link that has a temp chart: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/fl...ses-d_422.html
**NOTE: the temps are in Celsius**

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
