Default SV725 will not start

Last week I was driving my Cub Cadet when it gradually lost power and died. I tested the battery (which was left connected in all winter) and it would not hold a charge. I got a new battery, replaced the blown fuse and all I run into is the click of the solenoid and a whine.

I have found links that say there could be an issue with a part of the starter not connecting. What I need to know is, what bolts should I use to check on the starter. I am not mechanical, and if the local shop did not have a 2-3 week delay I would hand it over to them.

I can follow instructions. This: http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinec..._690_01_EN.pdf, only confused me...thanks in advance,

Rob

Refer to the Disassembly/Inspection and Service page of the linked manual fro the engine. If you remove the Blower Housing (typically four bolts) and expose the fan and flywheel assembly (pg 60) you can see the flywheel is a large toothed gear. The starter is a small cylinder on what might be considered the 'passenger side' of the engine and has a small gear that matches the gearing on the flywheel. When you turn the ignition the starter is elevated so its gear meshes with the flywheel gear and makes the flywheel spin. You can actually remove the blower housing and watch this happen when you start the motor. If the flywheel doesn't spin, the starter gears aren't engaging it properly or the starter isn't working. You can have somebody else turn the ignition so you can get a relatively close look at the starter. See if it lifts into position first, and if it does is it aligned so the gears mesh, and if they do mesh, does the starter turn?

The starter does pop up, it does engage with the spokes on the flywheel, but then it does not move it more than 1/6th of a turn and then stops.

The flywheel turns only a quarter, even with the spark plugs out. It is a hard stop. I am thinking I will have to take it to an expert, and wait for their queue to disappear.

If it won't turn with the plugs out, then it more than likely has some bad internal damage. That or something failed on the PTO. Motor is more likely the cause. Better start looking at getting a new mower. I suggest a CC older than 1995 personally.

Ugh, really? 3 years old, always checked/replaced the oil. What could have happened?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
