Had a good start to the mowing expedition with the 1872. Everything worked fine until I stopped the mower to go across the gravel driveway to the other side. Went to start the PTO and nothing...
So drove back to the house and tried it again. It engaged, but I noticed the charge indicator went to discharge. Shut the PTO off and the charge indicator went to charge... Well figured it worked so went back out and finished the mowing, but as I was I was also noticing the charge indicator was staying down on the discharge side, and occasionally would go up as far as center. Shut the PTO off to come back home and again the indicator went up to charge. When I got it parked, shut it off and tried starting it, and it fired right up, so it wasn't a dead battery. Any ideas? Field coil? But if it was the field coil, wouldn't it not engage until it cooled down? That's the way it was on my 782 when it went out. I didn't check anything out as of yet, didn't have time today, but would appreciate any ideas of where to start looking tomorrow.

I had intermittent PTO problems on my 2082. It SHut off but usually come back on. It always worked by the time I got back to the garage so testing with a VM didn't help much since I couldn't re-create the problem.
I swapped the PTO switch from another super and no change in behavior. I ended up going through the wiring and cleanup/firming up the connections as best I could. That circuit goes through many junctions/switches/points of failure. So far so good so good with fingers crossed. goodluck.

It's a poor connection at the ignition switch, Todd. BTDT. I've got one doing that off and on too.... just too lazy to fix it. I just open the hood, reach in and wiggle the plug on the switch while watching the charge indicator. Correct fix would be a new switch and pigtail.

If you can pull the right side of the tractor up to the "deck" you made for getting on it... you should be able to take the side panel off and get to it. If not, yeah, you'll have to pull the Haban. If you have forearms like Popeye, you may need to pull the fuel tank.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
