Hi, Newbie Cub Cadet owner with some questions. I bought my first Cub Cadet 1641 ( former owner of a series of Sears tractors) just last week from the original owner who purchased it new in 1995. It has 513 hrs. on it and runs great. Only problem is that last owner said it has a charging issue & kills batteries. Only when I engage the PTO does the amp/dash light go on. When I disengage it goes out? The other thing I came across is that when I move the Hydro trans. into reverse the PTO drops out? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome!
The PTO stops when you put it in reverse because of a safety switch. You can disable that if you like, but for liability reasons, we can't tell you how. The wiring on these models is a bit complex. It's possible that there is a short or something causing excessive current draw with the PTO on, but if it's done that since new, that's unlikely. I don't think the Briggs engines have very strong charging systems. I have an older CC with a twin B&S in it, and the alternator can barely keep up when the PTO is on. |

Thanks Matt for the quick reply. The original owner said it started having the charging problems in the last couple of years. Any thoughts on a good source for wiring diagrams? I guess if it is not a short my next option may be an alternator? After I straighten out the charging issue I may look into bypassing the PTO safety sw.

I have the same problem. Just bought my 1641 from a dealer. First time using the snow blower the battery light came on. Eventually the battery went dead. Called dealer and he said I bought a used tractor. That ticked me off. Did anyone find that wiring diagram? I don't see an answer to the previous queston.
