I find this ad on Craigslist about two months ago for a Cub Cadet lawn mower for $350. I click on it and instantly get anxious. I can see by the first picture it is a SGT cyclops. I scan the pics and see it has seen better days, but it has a 60" Haban. I hit the reply button with the force of Thor's mighty hammer and ask if its still available. Ten minutes later no reply, better text him. I wait 5 agonizing minutes and nothing, better call. So I call the number and after several suspenseful rings I get the voicemail. I politely give my name and number and reason for calling. I hang up the phone and my mind starts racing how I can get a closer look at this cub. Now it just so happens that this ad is local, and by local I mean according to the little map beside the pictures, 6 miles from my driveway. Time for some recon. Its a beautiful late June evening so I tell the significant other that I think I ll take a short motorcycle ride. She gives me her blessing and I sprint to the man cave to roll out the STREET LEGAL Honda XR600. In less time than it takes to push a start button, I have the old girl kicked over and trying to stand up going through the gears. I get to town and search a 4 block radius of where I assumed the treasure to be. No Luck. Defeated, I return to the man cave alone and slightly wind burnt.
Fast forward to last week, I am at work eating lunch and I get an email. It says: "Yes, I still have the Cub.". Now just so happens I have my trailer behind my pickup so I can go to TSC after work to pick up fence panels. Long story short...er, I pull in the driveway with a 1882 with 549 hours and a 60" Haban. After a quick pressure wash, all new fuel hose, carb clean, and a oil change it fired right up and purred like a twin cylinder kohler. After a short ride around the yard I realize the hour meter works and has to be accurate. Steering is like new and hydro is firm and consistent. Only problem is plastics are junk. Nose piece has been ripped off and hood is snapped in two, good news is that side panels are whole other than a couple tabs.
Sooo....if anyone has a cyclops nose they care to part with I am interested. Sorry for the long post, just really excited.

That's a great story. Very well told and very familiar for a lot of us. There's guilt involved after using the 3rd method of contact for someone after 30 seconds but hey, they're the ones selling. Great score. Pictures are a must. And no, we don't care that it's missing panels. Congrats on the one eye at a great price. Put an ad in the wanted section and you'll be on your way to having a complete cyclops.

Edit: I see you have a few already......and looks like you'll have many more

Sam,

If you think I suck now, just wait for the pics.

Also remember how i said it was 6 miles from my driveway? I lied, it was 5 on a back road.

Good news, bad news, GREAT NEWS!

The good? All plastics are still available from Cub new. The front grill with round head light kit and hardware/lights included is $140. Keep.that in mind when looking for used. The old push connector light bulbs from Cub are over $25 a piece!!!

The bad news? A new hood and front grill will cost as much or more new from Cub as you paid for the whole machine.

The GREAT news. You still will have a sweet SGT with new hood and grill for under a Grand!!!!

Congrats on a great score!!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
