I'm installing a new front oil seal in my 1450 K321 and am confused as to what the install depth should be. I have the manual but when looking at the cut away drawings I'm not sure which one to use. Of the four listed I believe it would be the Battery typical but the drawing for the breakerless typical resembles it closer. This engine uses points so it shouldn't the breakerless.
What depth do you guys use for the 1450 K321 engine?

If your putting in the seal in the plate you show, then it only goes in so far. Drive it in flush. The other seal needs installed past flush. 1/8" or so will be fine.

It only goes in so far? Is there a ridge that it goes up against? The manual makes me believe that maybe it is to be 1/2" deep? Maybe I'm over think this.

You might be able to put the crank in the plate and see where the old wear mark is on the crank, that would be an indication of depth.

Thanks, I was planning to do some measuring just to verify. The manual seems to have specific measurements it's just unclear which bearing plate I have.

Pretty clear to me which bearing plate you have... I can see the lip the seal rests on from my chair....
![]() Your making this harder than it is. Seal depth is not critical. As long as the flywheel doesn't hit it, and you don't knock it clear into the block on the "front" (rear seal by specification), it's fine. |
