Default 1641 PTO cuts off

I was mowing some 8 inch high grass around the garden this afternoon. About 15 minutes in the pto cut off and wouldn't come back on. I drove it to the house and checked the charging system, got about 15 volts at the regulator and battery. By that time the clutch would come back on, still got 14 something volts with the pto running the deck. I let it all cool off and went back to the garden and finished the mowing. It did cut off again at the end but came back on after a few minutes. What other checks do I need to make before I declare the PTO bad? Is this common behavior for a failing clutch? I have a manual, guess I could see what it says.

Sounds like the PTO is on it's way out. I would still double check the switch for continuity while flipping switch on and off and making sure connections are tight and are controlled corroded. You may want to check safety switches as well. These are quick, free, things to check before spending money.

I took it ( Warner CMSS-175 5218-29) off the tractor this morning. Looks like it's not adjustable. I checked the ohms, it starts off at 0 and slowly rises to 2.7. The connector has some loose strands I need to fix. The bearings turn ok. I'll clean it up some, fix the connectors, maybe repack the bearings and see what happens.

I cleaned 2 of the pieces up with some old gas but decided not to wet the part with the winding. There is a place about the size of a pencil at 12 o'clock where the wire is exposed. I checked the Xtreme replacement for this clutch and for a 1641 and they are different numbers so this is probably not the original clutch.

Yep looks like someone replaced that clutch with the later style. If it was my tractor this is what I would use.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
