When I joined the forum I said I'd never get a 2nd tractor...
ya'll said I would... Seems ya'll were right... For $75 and a u-haul rental I couldn't resist! I've had my 149 for a year now and I DO enjoy it... I've come to realize all the repairs it needs will be difficult to perform during mowing season cause I don't want the downtime -- so I got me a nearly complete 129 today with a 44" deck. I confess I'm very excited, all 3 spindles move freely but it does need a little patching/welding but I enjoy that kinda stuff... So now for example I can rebuild the steering column from the 129 at my leisure and then swap it onto the 149 minimizing down-time... According to the owner, it'd been sitting in the barn for 20 years but the engine does turn over. He was sure the hydro was good -- the hydro trunnion is smoother than on my 149 so limited hours might be true... The engine serial # tag says K321A -- I thought that was the 14hp like on my 149? He did say his son had swapped engines around trying to get it going at some point a few years ago... Besides the mule lift, what are the other differences between the 129 and 149? Is there anything on a 129 that I shouldn't use on a 149? It's unintentional but both pix make it look better than it is -- all the tires are dry rotted -- the good front tire is from my 149 that I brought to make it easier to push onto the trailer... Pretty much the same tractor except one is 12 HP and the other is 14
The 149 is more likely to have a hydraulic lift IIRC |

Are the rims the same? Of course "cadet salad" could have happened over the years... And of course I was hoping for an oem carb to rebuild but it has no markings on it I can see so I'm guessing it's just an older "off-shore" copy of the Kohler carb... |

Amazing how much bigger the tires are when you put air in them!
Yeah, I said that -- so much to learn about these little things... To my surprise the cracked tires all hold air -- even the one that was't seated on the rim when I picked it up! This will make moving it so much easier. And now I see the tires and rims are the same size... Got the carb off and I posted here trying to identify if it's an oem or a copy of the original oem type carb. https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...238#post497238 When I picked up the 129 the PO said it was complete except for removing the driveshaft and the grill... Turns out the driveshaft is there just not hooked up to the engine! So now I'm thinking I wanna try and get it running just to see how much of it really works! You can see where this is going -- it was supposed to be a parts tractor but... As for Scouts, hell yeah, I love 'em.! This is my second daily driver Scout! And Scouts are the reason I got a cub -- never thought I'd ever own a "riding mower" but here I am now living in OH and my gawd but the grass does grow here!

The tires have held air for 3 days now -- remarkable!
I've dissembled the carb and confirmed it's an OEM Carter, for a 14hp engine. The engine data plate is a K321A with a spec code of 60166D. If anyone can point me to what that means ![]() Looking forward to getting the carb back together soon (just need to fab up a float bowl gasket). I noticed the linkage swaged onto the throttle lever is loose. That would've kept the throttle from moving properly and may be why even with the engine swap they couldn't get the 129 going? A little zap from my MIG, should take care of that. The starter/generator (being an ol' Huey guy) I love this design! spins free so although it could use a cleanup it probably works as is. I'm guessing it's best to try and start the engine w/out the driveshaft hooked up, and remove as many variables from the equation as possible...? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
