Hello everyone,
Total newbie here but after searching through the forum, I sure appreciate the willingness to help. I recently bought a used 1641 and after a few runs, the old rig wouldn't start. A new solenoid fixed 1 problem, but now the battery isn't charging. I've checked the stator and am getting low 30's AC out. My question is can the output voltage be too high? I'm testing 20v DC out of the regulator. At first I was thinking awesome! But I see that it should really be mid 13's. Before I started chasing back up to the key switch, I figured I'd check with the pros. Any help is very much appreciated. Steve |

First, welcome to OCC........
![]() The output of the V/R should be 13.5 to 14.00 VDC. The output is based on that the "V/R Housing" has a good ground. With a VOM or a DVM meter, measure the resistance from the V/R Housing to the Battery Negative Terminal. You should have Zero Ohms. If you don't have a meter, then take a Jumper Wire and jumper between the V/R Case and Battery Negative Termnal. If you see the normal output, then you have a grounding issue. If no change is seen, then replace the V/R.

Thank you for the welcome AND suggestion. I do have a meter, so I'll do the check you recommended.

0 Ohms it is! New V/R I guess. Hopefully a bad V/R putting out excess voltage doesn't damage anything else. ?

I am not a big fan of the Vanguard VR's. I replace them with Kohler VR's.

Check the voltage at the battery while it is running should be 13 to 14 vdc. If it is 20 then there is a problem.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
