In working on my 1650, I noticed that there was no clearance between the exhaust valve and the tappet - the manual says .017/.019 for exhaust. My father-in-law had made adjustments to this valve before I received it. I made the proper adjustments, just before the my starter issues (previous thread) crept up, so I haven't had a chance to see if things work better. Would the lack of clearance between the tappet and exhaust valve cause a hard start due to the automatic compression release function on the Kohler 341?

If the clearance was too slim to nothing, it would raise the exhaust valve higher than normal, and you might be getting into a "carboned up" area of the valve, causing some sticking.
You might want to try some of this in your Fuel Tank....

Thanks for the advice. Would the exhaust valve opening too far have any effect on starting?

YUP.....you would have less compression to none at all.
