Default New toy
So last night I scored something I've always wanted since I was a little kid, one of my friends gave me a go kart. He said it ran but the throttle was all or nothing so I picked it up and after about 10 minutes of tinkering I had the problem sorted out and was running it up and down the road, my son who will be 5 soon could hardly contain himself when I brought it home and he loved it even more once I took him for a ride. It's got a 6.5hp tecumseh engine so it scoots pretty good even with me on it, it still needs a little TLC but overall it's in good shape and everything works. I just need to recover the seat in vinyl so it doesn't get wet sitting outside and I need to build a rollbar to keep my boy safe, hopefully my wifes uncle can bend some pipe for me so it looks professional and not like some idiot did it. I will post a pic of the new buggy when I get home.

That sounds great Tim, I hope you and your boy have a great time with it. Makes me think of last summer when I bought a mini bike kit for my kids. I watched as my 16 year old and 14 year old put it all together, running into and resolving problems, testing and fixing and designing, they really had a great time .

Congrats on the new toy. As a former go kart racer, I'm not sure a roll cage is a good idea. It will move the center of gravity up much higher and may make it more prone to roll overs.

You could put a restrictor plate in between the block and carb to reduce power. That's what the WKA ( world karting association ) did for the 5 hp briggs in the kid's classes. ( iirc , .425 for up to 8 or 10 years old and .575 for up to 12 years old )

im not building a full cage, just a hoop behind the seat like this one.

I suggest a "horse collar" too. Helps keep the neck from getting compressed if "stuff happens".
