What usually happens or OCC's is that the clutch gets a little rusty from sitting outside and when the owner pushes in the clutch it keeps going. Then when they can't get it stopped they jerk the gearshift out of gear and bend the shift forks. Since the shift fork is bent everything doesn't line up right and it starts popping out of gear till it chips teeth on the tranny. Most everybody mows and such in second gear, so thats the one that takes the hit.
I would bet you need a 2/3 gear set and to straighten and weld up the shift fork. Brian Millers site has the info on how to fix it and here is the link. http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/index.htm Randy
