Here is how I see it based on my 104.
You start out with a budget in mind. Mine was $500, I paid $175 for the tractor and $65 for the front blade and planned to just use it to tug stuff around the yard and plow snow with it. It smoked bad and the paint was only in somewhat ok shape. My goal was to fix the smoking engine and repaint it and replace any worn out parts along the way. If that is all I would have done I would have been within my budget no problem. I only had to put new rings and a headgasket in the motor($60), replace the clutch/driveshaft ($200), and paint($100). Beyond that I made a new wiring harness ($30), Bought and painted a 3 point hitch($85), Bought mower deck and everything to go with it ($150), Bought a back grader blade ($75), Bought a set of used 6-12 ags and rims ($50), Upgraded and rebuilt the steering column/tierod ends ($50), and got a homemade headlight set up ($40) Im sure Ill still drop another $100 into it at least before its done plus I want tri ribs so make it $200. That comes to a grand total of about $1,280. I feel bad for over doubling my budget on this but I would have been buying a $999 rear engine rider and a $300 snowblower for the same money that would be garbage in 5 years. In 5 years I will more than likely be using this tractor with another 5 years left in it.
