Hello everyone! My name is Calvin Carlson and I'm a senior at Iowa State University and have been an IH collector and tractor guy my whole life, and have recently gotten into the world of the Cub Cadets.
My grandfather bought this model 129 at a friends estate sale, and I have decided to fix it up: First for our renter to use, and Second, someday for me to use when I get my own place. When I drug the cub into the shop, it did not run and judging by the carb, it hadn't had new gas put in it for 10+ years. I purchased and installed 4 new tires, cleaned out the carburetor, took the starter/generator apart and cleaned it up, and the cub started --- with some help. The engine seemed to have very low compression, which I was concerned about, and I know now today after taking off the head, I will probably be putting in nearly a full engine overhaul kit. Overall the tractor isn't in too bad of condition otherwise, and the mower deck is free and solid. Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
