2072 Hyd Pump input shaft splines worn

My father was pulling the leaf vacuum with my 2072 and the coupler that attaches to the splined shaft on the front of the hydrostatic transmission broke loose.

I had replaced the coupler with an original cub cadet part back in the spring. I noticed the splined shaft was worn, but thought it would handle a fresh coupler with no problem. Apparently, the worn splines have destroyed the new coupler as well.

I just checked partstree and a new shaft is over $650! Do you guys have any tips for fixing the existing shaft or perhaps know which other models of cub cadets might have pumps with a replacement shaft that will fit so I can start looking for used ones?

I'm pretty disappointed. I spent $140 on the coupler now I'm faced with replacing that as well as a potentially expensive shaft. It happened right in the middle of gathering a huge amount of leaves.
