ACR Issues?
Got a freshly rebuilt K301 that is very hard to start. It will crank and crank and never really try to start. I swapped carbs with a carb off a good runner, no change. I static timed the points, no improvement. I have good spark. Rechecked the valve lash, within spec. In order to get it to start I had to tighten up the point gap a little from the static time gap, which came out to about 0.021/0.022. With a tighter gap and a little throttle it will finally start cranking faster and eventually take off. Prior to this it would occasionly backfire and cranking speed would fluctuate. I pulled the head and gasket looked good and valve seats/sealing looks good. I have not pulled the cam cover yet. The springs and weights looked good when I put together the engine, but the can was from a different motor as I chose to not use the original can as there was some wear on the points plunged lobe. With head off the exhaust valve does lift slightly on the compression stroke. Attached are some pics.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester.
