982 hydro ???

My 982 is having a problem with the hydro. When you are going forward and pull the lever back to go in reverse it continues to go forward for a bit and then slowly into reverse. This happens going from reverse to forward also. This has been sitting for a while now but had always worked good until the other day. Could this be the check valves or relief valves just needing cleaning? I read to soak them in solvent, would brake/parts cleaner do the job?
I have some valves from a 149 that are known to be good. Will these fit? The 982 has the auto valves and the 149 has the button. Would they work just the same?
