Slow and steady progress. Really hoping to have enough time to finish this round of repairs this weekend.
Today, I modified the cradle a second time to make sure both the ISO mounts and the oil pan would bolt up. The cradle doesn't drop right into the mounts the way I would expect, but it does fit. After that, I took the Kohler on to my bench and started to dismantle the shrouding and cylinder head. Found that the engine has been rebuilt once, has .010 stamped on piston and block. Some side play in the piston at the top of the bore and a little oil in the combustion chamber. It will need rebuilt eventually, but for now I'm putting it back together and making sure it stays cool and running properly. One head bolt, the one behind the ignition coil, was completely loose, and the cylinder head had a good leak in this area and around the front stud. Cleaned everything up, inspected the cylinder bore and it doesn't look terrible, but again, I know it will need rebuilt soon so I'm not getting too carried away. Installed head, made pan gasket, installed pan, and degreased the engine. It looks much better now and should get some decent airflow. The top engine tin was cracked and installed improperly so I welded it back together and made sure everything was going to fit upon reassembly. Whoever rebuilt the engine or had worked on it recently didn't have much of an eye for detail. Fixed the trunnion slot , installed new springs and end caps, shimmed the pivots on the control plates for the hydro. Installed fan and got the driveshaft in, ready for engine install. Cleaned and painted the tins. Started fabricating new power and ground main leads.
