Starting Issues
Developed something new today on my 102. I go to start and I get a loud "thunk" each time I turn the key. Seems to me its the solenoid (or magnetic switch assembly as I find it called too). Either way its behind the ignition switch and its the source of the noise.
This sound correct or should I check other parts of the system first?

Yeah, that sounds like a bad solenoid. You can test it by shorting it across the two big terminals with a pair of pliers, but be VERY careful doing that, as it's difficult to do this safely. If it cranks when you short the solenoid, the solenoid is bad or you aren't getting 12V at the solenoid.

thanks! I talked with my dad today and he said back on the day of his mechanic years he'd take the starter solenoid's apart and fix the inside parts and get things working again. This is of course back when cars had generators and well, must simpler starting systems.
I'm going to try and pull it apart and see if he's right about the metal plate inside getting corroded...won't cost me anything and if it works then very cool. Need to save some dough for my clutch rebuild!
