Thanks for all the information. I'll start by taking apart the carb and soaking it, plus rebuilding it. I've been looking around for a rebuild kit but I can't seem to find one. The carb has two sets of numbers on it one is C-236315 and the other is 235058. None of those return any results for a rebuild kit as far as I've searched. Do you know where I could find a kit for this carb? I'll also take a look to see if the head gasket is leaking, it probably is as the entire block is covered in dried out grease/oil. Again thanks for all the help, I'm looking forward to getting this thing running right soon. |

So I've got an update, I cleaned the carb today and made sure all of the holes were clear. I put it all back together and set the high speed needle at 2 turns and the idle speed at 2 1/2 turns and tried to start the cub, but no luck. It cranks, and smells like gas, but wont start at all now. I looked at the points and didn't see a spark so I'm going to attempt to set the timing in the next few days.

You might try running a jumper wire from Battery + to Coil +. Then use your 12V test light from ground to Coil -. While cranking the engine, watch the light to see if it goes on and off. Try this with the jumper wire off too.

I adjusted the points to .020 per the instructions in the technical section, and still nothing. I also ran a jumper cable from battery + to coil + and used a multimeter at coil - and I got 0 volts while cranking. I also used the multimeter at the battery, at the regulator and at the coil +. At all areas I was getting 12v even at the points I was getting 10 v while cranking. Any ideas why it's not starting? I also noticed white puffs from the exhaust while cranking, is that a sign of anything? Would cranking the engine with the battery hooked up reverse polarity damage anything?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
