Hi
I just picked up a QA42A with a broken chute control rod. I think its missing stuff rather than broken. It has the sprocket with the rod attached in the center of it, that goes threw a support housing, and the rod just ends there. How it ends doesn't look broken, it has a half circle in it, same as the rod that would somehow connect to that this end (the other end of this rod goes to the the universal joint). In looking I realized I am missing a spring, but is there anything else I'm missing? If I add a spring, and just has the two piece welded together, would there be a problem? Sorry if my description is hard to follow, I can post a picture in about 1.5 days if needed. Thank you |

Thank you
Now that i looked closer at the one I have, i see its broke. The spring part looks really easy to duplicate. I might have the rod welded and then drill a hole above the original hole and use a longer spring maybe. It also depends on how well the welder can do. |

I contacted R.F. Houtz and Son the other day and bought a used sprocket and spring. Also got the top link that I was missing from them. He said the parts would be shipped today. to hold the spring in place, I'm going to use a cotter pin and just use a washer, which looks like you have the same.
Anyway, thank you for the picture, it was a big help in figuring out how it should go. |

I would highly recommend replacing the really crappy stamped-steel U-joint with a die-cast pin-and-block U-joint like the one in my picture. It really makes the rotation work a lot better. You can get them from McMaster-Carr.

Thank you, that is probably something I have to do in the future. Currently my car is sitting in the driveway because the transmission has some problem and although I don't think it needs a rebuild, its going to cost $200 to $400 to fix. Half the cost is going to be in reading the codes from the transmission. Its a 93 with a full electronic trans, so yea, I don't have a lot of options nor do I have a lot of money so I'm just working on getting things fixed, and as time goes on, updating them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
