Default kohler help asap please

kohler help asap please
A few wks ago i rebuilt a 10hp kohler motor its ran pretty good just needed carb adjusted ! guy was coming to pick it up so i pushed it outa the garage & was going to start & fine tune carb ! WOULDNT START!!! So that really put a knot in my plow line cuz i had to call him back & tell him it wasn't ready after all ! I checked the usual & nothing obvious ! As not to drag this out this is what Ive done over the last three days !! CHANGED : points 3 times, coil twice, condenser 3 times, adjusted valves 3 times to specs 1 time by site, 3 different carbs & 3 different plugs & it does the same thing every time valves in 00.9 exh 00.18 plug gap 30 points 20 ! Anyway symptoms are as follows
crank,crank,crank & nothin, pull plug no gas in chamber so i figure vacuum leak right cuz gas pours out carb when i choke it with my hand over it ! it will fire one time maybe a pop pop but no more than 3 & that's all your gonna get till i go through the whole song & dance again & then you might get it to do it again ! i can feel good compression leaking off real slowly when turning it by hand but that's normal right? i can hear carb sucking air on intake stroke also so anyway im stumped & need new set of eyes to go over this & tell me what I'm missing they all seem to run together after a while !

AppEdge,

I went through EXACTLY the same thing this past weekend on a 1450! Engine ran before I replaced all of the ignition components and rebuilt the carb.

Once all back together, it would not even act like it wanted to fire. Found some trash/water in the fuel bowl. Removed carb and gas tank for thorough cleaning. Did notice that the ring gasket on fuel bowl may not have been seated properly. Put it all back together again and still nothing more than an occasional backfire (more like a poof!) through the carb.

Checked and double checked everything. As a last resort, I finally went back to the timing using the 'static' procedure again and put the flywheel "S" just below center of the viewing window. Cranked it over and it fired right up and ran great!

So, if you have fuel and fire, I would suggest tweeking the timing setting up and down to see if that gets you anywhere. I've seen some posts where guys run anywhere between 13 and 22 degrees, so I guess dead on 20 is not necessarily perfect.

Not sure if this will help, but it did work for me! Please keep us posted on your results!

Thanx nashcub i never would thought to set points that close but im at a stand still as it is right now so ill play with it a lil more & let you know

Are you using the 'static' timing method with a multimeter?

uh! no I'm not qualified for that particular piece of technology lol! No i dont have one ! be a good time to own one though!

Best $10 you'll spend. You could use a timing light if you have one of those. Both methods are better then setting points at .020.
