if off color talk offends you then hit the back button!!!! LOL seriously, i have just recently acquired a 1982 allis chalmers 716. it has a broken rod and also it has the balance gears. my question/comment/what have ya! if a motor came with the BG's do you HAVE to put them back in? i mean, they were designed to have them YET only one of the kohler motors i have has them (69 14hp economy). i realize that it reduces the vibration, but i'm not going to cut grass with it, just use it as a bigger tractor. i really don't won't them in there because on more than one occasion, i have heard of them letting go and doing ALOT of damage. everyone please give me thoughts and opinions. thanks, jeff i will post pics later

Their designed intent was to reduce vibrations on Kohler singles, but the extent of vibration dampening goes almost unnoticed...at least to me, and I've run and heavily used tractor with, and without them. I usually remove them when I rebuild a block only because they have been known to grenade and destroy other internal engine components.
So my vote is.... if your in there, take them out... if you dont have any in there now, leave it that way ![]() Jeff (teet)

If the BG's are in there get them out of there! Nothing good will come out of leaving them in there!

I have a way with words myself! I agree with the rest, leave the balance gears on the bench! They were a horrible engineering idea.

I just got to that point in disassembly with one of my engines that has them. Is there any way to/should i remove the shafts they're mounted in? It looks like I can drive or press them out but that would leave two holes in the block?

The shafts will be fine. If I am not mistaken, they are machined in the block, no way to remove them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
