Default Gauge for setting up rearend??

Is this the correct type of gauge needed to set up the rearend ???? I don't know the history of it but it is cheap, guess I could have it calibrated if needed. Oh yea, it's a model 196.

Chip, that is what you need but you will also need a magnetic base. I think I paid $40 for everything off of evilpay from Anytimetool. Go on Youtube and reserch how to check backlash in a rear. There are some good vids on there about how to do it. Good luck.....and don't forget the pics.

Default rear gears

That is the proper gauge, dial indicator.
Back in my darker drag racing days, and old man showed me the cheap easy way to set ring to pinion clearance.

a piece of notebook paper is the proper thickness, 6-7 thousands.

Install the gears, then run the paper in between the ring and pinion, if all the play disappears, and the gears don't bind, you have the correct clearance.

But then you wouldn't get to buy another cool tool.
