rear mower
Has anyone built, or at least thought of building a rear brush mower that would work with the gear drive PTO? Or at least the belt drive/gear box PTO?
I've had the idea for awhile now, maybe I'm not the only one. I was thinking of the width of 36" or 42", just enough for trails. Either tow behind or semi mount. I'd be interested in brainstorming with anyone who would have interest in this project. Rotation and rpm are problems that could be easily overcome. Any ideas? |

A couple weeks ago my uncle gave me a snapper walk behind with a seized engine. The deck frame is held in place with one large pivot pin. I thought of turning the deck frame around and adapting it to the sleeve hitch and making a brush hog out of it. I could make a mount to fit the sleeve hitch and have the swivel wheels face the back. After that I would have to rig up a belt system to run it. I probably won’t get to this project for a while but I hope this give you some ideas.
Here’s another idea I found on the www Swisher Rough-Cut, Pull-Behind 48-In. Mower, H.D. w/12.5 hp Motor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VextmF3k5WA |

Questions I have: 1. Do you want it mounted? Or pull behind? 2. Does your machine have 3pt or sleeve hitch? 3. What model of tractor is it? |

How about right angle box? What gear ratio?

I think the 90 degree gear boxes are 1 to 5, or something like that. Im not sure how well one would hold up without a slip clutch. they seem to do well with the tillers, but then again they have two belts to absorb shock. I keep looking at the L42 2000rpm mower they made for the supers, and wishing they made one for the older tractors.

I was thinking either trailer type, sleeve hitch or semi mount with the factory 3pt. made to run behind a NF or a QL

I have no information on this setup. Seen this about 10 yrs ago from some online site. I don't know if it was functional or for "show purposes". It might give you some ideas.

thats the exact picture that inspired this idea. Its awfully tempting considering I have a timed deck just sitting around, but I think considering the scarcity of them it will stay a belly deck. the driveline from a old junk 5ft brush mower would work, a bit overkill though. use an adapter for the PTO output. next issue is a stump jumper. I wonder what could modified to work.

i made the same mower about a year ago...was going to use a snowblower gear box to power the belt to the deck, and a PTO shaft running to the rear PTO on my 122. i never could find a yoke to fit the shaft on the 122 though so i scrapped my deck project thing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
