1450 Front Axle Play at Pivot Pin
The 1450 I’m restoring has approx 1/2 inch of front-to-back play on the front axle at the pivot pin. Looking at the diagram in my IH service manual, it doesn’t show a thrust washer/bushing. Is this play normal? I personally don’t like it and want to fix it. What do you guys do to fix this when it happens?

I have used a 3/4" gr5 bolt. Can't tell you the length of it. On some models the bolt hits the oil pan if it is too long. With the bolt you can draw the channel together and remove the play.

One of our Members cured the problem like Richard was talking about.

I've used the bolt to squeeze the channel closed, then reinstall with a new axle pivot pin. Just don't squeeze it too much.

I see you have fixed them with a bolt before but is that really better than having the original style pin in there? I was thinking I could use the original pin with a bronze washer in there to act as a thrust washer......kind of like on Farmall Cub tractors. |

That sounds like a plan, the way the pictures are the motor would have to be lifted to remove the pin.
Maybe weld a castle nut where the bolt head is now and drill a hole in the bolt for a cotter pin.

Front Axle Play at Pivot Pin
3000 series come from the factory with a bolt to tighten up the pivot channel due to wear.

The 82 series used a bolt also.

Shimming is definitely one of the common fixes.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
