CH18S down on power , knocking ? Next steps
My CH18s in my 2518 had a sudden loss of power combined with some pretty nasty clanky knocking sounds. I suspect rod knock but not sure yet. Need some help for next steps. I will do a compression test on both cylinders. I am not sure if I know how to do a leakdown test on this motor, yet. What else? What should I be thinking for rebuild, or replacement?
Can I buy a new drop in motor . I see a couple on Northern Tool that look pretty familiar. Example: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/to...2772_200632772 What else should I be considering?

Check your rocker arm action. Sounds like one may not be going full stroke?

One of the "driver" side (left) rocker arms is knocked out of place. https://www.flickr.com/photos/187179.../shares/V6W4w2 Do I just stick it back in the correct spot and re-torque (ft lb?) or is there any sort of adjustment or lash I need to take into consideration?

You may also have a stuck valve which would let the pushrod jump out of place. You have hydraulic lifters and the adjustment procedure is in the manual. If the push rod is bent, you may have more serious problems. |

Thanks ,pushrod looked straight to me. My guess is that the rocker pivot bolt just backed out. Everything seems pretty good right now. Thanks a lot for your help!

you could have a valve seat floating around
I had one do the same thing put it back on and ran ok for a week or so then same problem pulled head and found valve seat was out of head there is no lash adjustment on the command engine, they have hydraulic lifters. just run the bolt down all the way and snug it up good. I'm sure there is a torqe spec but I don't know it. spec is Rocker Arm Screw 18.1 N·m (160 in. lb.)

sometimes the threads will pull out of the head and let the bolt come loose. if the threads are stripped you'll need a helicoil to fix the threads

That picture looked just like one of my engines. I rolled the pushrod on glass. It seemed straight. Put it together and has run for a few years without incident. Hopefully you have similar good fortune

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
