Default 73 Engine question

Picked up a bunch a parts that used to be a 73. The good news the correct dash tower, the metal dash and I have most the parts needed to complete it. The cub came with with an 8hp Kohler, I have read in "50 years of CubCadets" they used the 8hp as a replacement, has anyone else heard of this?

It does smoke some but I will tear it down and rebuild it if need be, gonna keep the muffler for sure.

It does not have a tank, does the tank mount like it does on the other narrow frames? The blower housing only has one mounting stud on it, I have some pics to show what I have.

I don't know much about the k181, but I do know that that muffler is for a Wide Frame model 86 and is pretty hard to find!

Fuel tank should mount the same, it might be the smaller round tank though and not the bigger one.

And yes they did use the k181 as a replacement.

Thanks for the quick reply!!!

The 73 along with others Cubs came from a gentleman who's father was Cub dealer years ago, that is probably how it ended up with the 73.

BTW: It was pretty cool to watch all the crud blow out of the muffler....

The motor is from a 86, so you need the correct engine or the pto will not align with the mule drive.

That is correct I had a 70 that had the k 181 in it out of an 86, and I never could get the PTO to line up. If I remember right I think it stuck out to far.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
