K301A Questions
I tore apart my 301 today already knowing it needed a rod. needless to say I found a chunk broke out at the bottom of the cylinder. the piston has a bad spot on the topside edge but the cylinder looks to be alright. it looks to me that the rings don't travel that far down. has anyone rebuilt a motor with the
cylinder blown out like this. the piston is stamped STD so i hope to give it a light hone. Any thoughts would be helpful. Have a happy new year and tractor on guys. Randy |

The chunk broken out of the bottom is no problem as long as it isn't in the area where the rings travel, and the edges are smoothed out so it doesn't try to crack.
I disagree that it looks alright...I see a lot of scoring in the bore...no way is a 'light honing' going to clean that up. You need to find a reputable machine shop who can measure the bore and determine what needs to be done, which will most likely be to bore it oversize. Edit: And obviously you need a new piston, too. The carb must have been set too lean, or there was a LOT of carbon in there. |

x2, Time for a rebore and new piston. Ditch the grenade gears while you're in there as well.

I agree with the guys on this one and a machine shop can also check to see if there is any cracks going out of broken area.

Hi cc125,
Yes I agree the block with the cracked skit should still be serviceable. Matt and several others here guided me through the rebuild this fall on a K321 and it had the same chunk out of the bottom of the skirt. Pictures are in thread "Added more IH equipment". I used a die grinder and small grinding wheels to carefully smooth out all the sharp rough edged prior to taking it to the machine shop. I also agree that you have gone this far at least check the bore with a good set of bore mics to see if you have wear. You can get the complete rebuild kit for about $100. Yea it cost some money but a good rebuild should last you years and years! Regards, Chris

My K301 looked like yours. No problem to rebuild.
Relieve any sharp edges with a die grinder and you should be fine. Be sure to put in a new governor shaft/tab thing while you're in there. I didn't, and I fear I'm running on borrowed time. It's the first part you put in the engine when you're putting it back together.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
