Default mule drive - question/ problem??

Guys,

I was mowing this weekend.. it seems like there is a lot of movement during engagement of the mower deck on the pulley. I can hear a constant loud rattling noise from the pulley lock( when you pull it fwd to replace a belt).

Is this normal? I assume that the only real problems would be a bad pulley bearing or the spring. Correct?

Michael, it shounds like the bearing is the problem to me. It wouldn't hurt to look at the spring to see if it's broke tho.

Ok,

I'll check the pulleys. SPring does not look broken? Do they get weak with age?

The spring would get weaker with age but the bearings would fail before the spring would get that slack.

I have heard rattling on mine, but I think it was just the locking lever rattling vertically. It's not overpowering sound, but just sounds like chain rattling in the front.

Sounds like it's normal to have the rattle.

I'll check the bearings.. and put a new spring on it with the new belt this spring.

Never hurts to give the whole thing a "once-over" before mowing season hits hot and heavy.

thanks guys...

I put a new belt on it and replaced the pulleys(only 1 was bad). It's much better. The rattles are the metal spring is almost gone. I threw it out and put a oring on each side instead- dead quite now.

Need to work on the angle for the idler pulley on the mule drive. Lots of play on the tensioner side. Maybe a new shaft and some work to the lever arm- bushings, brazing, etc.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
