Help with Kohler KT-17 engine numbers
I have a Kohler KT 17 on a (RED) International Cub Cadet 782. The serial number for the tractor tells me it was made in early 1980. The spec and serial numbers I have found on the motor are on a have worn off decal. My question is, can I find the information I need about my motor stamped anywhere on the motor,so I buy the right parts such as (gaskets, rings, etc.)The numbers I found on the decal are too worn to read. Thanks for any help.Curtis

Curtis my guess is it's too early to be a Series II, all KT 17s are the same except the Series II lubricated the rod journals too. I have a spec number if you need it to order gaskets, pistons, rings etc...
Ya know though if it hasn't thrown a rod it will as soon as you replace the rings and.... Scott |

I forgot to ention it is a series II motor.I says that on a large sticker. Also what do you mean by it will throw a rod if I replace the rings? Also where can I get a copy of a spec sheet if the series II are all the same?

That number I gave you is the spec off a KT17 Series II I took out of a 782. They are the same motor and that should get you the parts you need.
Yes on a motor that old if you don't change the rods and just do the jugs you'll throw a rod in short order. Just my opinion. Scott |

It's just my opinion and it's what I have done for myself.
Look for a good runner to replace the motor you have, my guess is you could find one in a few weeks if you look hard enough and you might find a running tractor for about $350, now you have a running motor and a bunch of spare parts. Now you have all year to rebuild the old one. To rebuild yourself you'll have about $600 in that motor, now spread that out over several months and it won't hurt your purse so much. To buy a long block rebuilt you'll pay about $1100 to $1200. Now once you have your new motor you can keep you new/old one as a spare or put it back in the donor tractor and sell it again. Scott |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
