Smile suprise gift RER 85

I've seen this setting in a field next to a camper, plastic lawn chairs setting on top of unit. Stopped and asked what were they going to do with mower?
they said git out of yard it's mine! I go into rescue mode ( totally react no brain in gear) . Nefew half carrings to trailer, all tires on rear flat, front low, unit has been sitting there for 4 yrs. I always test nubies on trailer, hit rear tires with air, came up ok, but checked bad. has pull & elec.start rope was totally out, thaught motor was froze ,worked rope back in, pulled motor turned! checked oil,was ok. Hooked jump start unit sprayed gas in carb. turned over 5 times started running ,no knock, no smoke! might have a keeper?

esarvey: First, congratultions on your "freebie". The IH Rear Engine Riding (RER) Mowers are excellent for maintaining smaller yards.

I recommend that you get:

1) Operators Manual IH Publication 1 084 449 R5
2) IH TC-120 Parts Manual
3) IH GSS 1417 Chasis Service Manual Manual
4) IH GSS 1441-2 Engine Service Manual (or the Briggs & Stratton Single Cylinder "L" Head Service Manual which includes this engine.).

Note: Each manual has informatoin on your Model 85 that the others do not. You really need'em all.

The IH Publications are likely available from www.binderbooks.com and the B&S pub is available from most small engine sources. You can also order the B&S pub from places like Books -A-Milion or Barnes & Noble etc. Putting a want ad for them on the OCC isn't a bad idea either.

Also get yourself some PB Blaster and start soaking those rusted up parts... PB Blaster works but is not "instant magic". Let it soak and give the catalytic penetrant time to do it's job...

I generally put tubes in those old tires... Usually works for me...

For the electrical system...go to extra lengths to ensure you have a good ground cables and contact points.

Post your questions as they arise... Some one will have the answer, I'm sure and despite Wild Bill's kind words (Thank you, Sir), and while I do have a good reference library, I assure you I don't know it all.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
