Question A Tale of 2 Cam Stops

I have an 1872 that I am still in the process of giving a new coat of paint to. While in the process, I am adding parts that need replacement or are missing. One of the MIA parts is the cam stop on the RH side of the frame. I ordered a BRAND NEW One from my favorite cub cadet dealer and it arrived within the week. Since I still had things apart for the painting process I did not look at to try it out. Well, I tried to put it on the frame and the cam (703-0189) does not fit! The taper on the cam is too small to fit the corresponding tapered shaft on the tractor. As a matter of fact, the new cam doesn't engage the taper at all and sits on top of the tapered shaft with just enough room to fit the threaded knob through. I took the same cam off of my 1572 and it fits perfectly on the tapered shaft on the 1872.
I called the Cub Cadet dealer and he ordered several NOS cams and they all came in with the same small DIA on the order of about .5" at the opening of the taper on the cam. The dealer also went home and checked his 782 and told me the cam fit his 782. When I get out of work, I'm going to check my 782D, but there is something wrong here. I was told by the dealer that there is only 1 cam part # for all these series of tractors, including 1572 and 1872. Yet it won't fit. Are there other part numbers I am missing out on? What is the dia of the opening of the throat on the cam of your 1572, 1872 and/or 782?

I just measured the dia of the opening of the throat of the cam from the 782D. It measures about .794". The dia at the same spot on the new cam is .540". There's still red paint on the taper of the cam from the 782D!

I don't know if you have access to a machinist or tool room but my first thought would be to get a 3/4" or 1" countersink and open the taper up a little larger. You might be able to acquire a countersink through Harbor Freight and do it yourself.

cubs-n-bxrs, I was thinking the exact same thing, only thing I am puzzled. Since there seems to be only 1 part number, are these made wrong or should there be 2 part numbers for the parts?

The part number, CC (703-0189) or IH (132460C1) was supplied by my dealer ans was also the person who told me when he looked it up, that he could search a part and display what model(s) it is used on. He said that part is used on a large range of tractors right through the 82 series. He was rattling off models so fast I could not write them down.

You can go to cubcadet.com and look up the part # and see all the models that number fits. I checked the part # you listed, 703-0189, and this is what all it will fit.

Thanks Chip, I can use this as a reference. I called one of the sponsors at the top of the page. They went through some drawers and found some cam stops with different throat sizes some approaching what I've seen on my machines. What a difference in sizing!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
