well lets look at it this way. My pro super engine has a shallow pan and a dipper not even an inch long. holds 1 qt 2oz of oil. as a super it turn hi 9's off the starting line, the frt comes up and after way to many runs to count has the same rod bearing for 5 years. put the short pan on, cut the dipper off . positon the crank at the bottom of its stroke , remove the cam cover and fill with oil till the oil comes to the bottom of the rod cap completly covering the dipper. install the cam cover and remark your dipstick.

also running an oil with a higher zinc content is good for these old K series. I've been running Mobile Delvac 15-40 thats recomened for diesel engines rather than automotive blends

Yep the zinc in Delvac, Rotella diesel engine oil and some of the off road racing oil will help the life of the cams and lifters.

VERY good information! I think of this when running vintage car engines with flat tappet cams, but sorry to say, it hasn't struck my mind on this little engine.

I have a 12 mounted in my O it was off a gravely so it has a deep, flat bottomed pan just made some motor mounts for it and it sets in there nicely
