Air Filter Mounting Bolts
I have a question to those out there that have smokers, more so the first ones that came out, 782D, 882, 1512, 1572, 1772.... Have you had the air filter bolts shear off? The bolts in question are the bolts that attach the air cleaner mounting bracket to the engine by the flywheel end of the engine. If I can remember correctly without going out in the cold to check, it is the top bolt. I have tried multiple bolts, soft steel, hardened steel, bolts threaded right to the head, bolts with as much unthreaded shank as I could get. I've tried to "pre-position" or preload the aircleaner to have it centered, offset one way or the other to stop the breakage. I really don't know what causes it other than a maybe a scissor-type action that occurs and shears the bolt as the air-cleaner and engine move independently while the engine is running. I've had my 782D go though about 6 bolts. My 1572 though three and it is currently holding, knock on wood. The air cleaner bracket on the 782D is held on with 1 bolt for a while.

Yep, the 1572 I'm working on now had one of the bolts broken and I think one of my others has a broken bracket. Is it from all the vibration and shaking?

I've even drilled out the bolt holes and installed larger diameter bolts to see if they would fare better. The larger bolts sheared off as well. Any other ideas to hold this together ?
