I don't see why you couldn't punch the small bore block out to the newer style. IIRC I read somewhere that oohler went to the new bore to make it cheaper between building the k161 and k181 talk to you.machining guy he should be able to tell you

The 28542 Engine used a 2-7/8" (2.875) STD Piston. The newer K-161 used 2-15/16 (2.938).
Here are the Pistons available: 41-874-01 = STD 41-874-02 = .010 41-874-03 = .020 41-874-04 = .030 You could bore to the STD (2.938) if you wanted.
