Default Balance Gear Removal Question

Balance gear removal question. I pulled the balance gears from my K301 engine tonight. The one nearest the oil pan, it was easy - remove the snap ring and the gear and needle bearing assy comes out. The one in the top of the engine, a chisel and hammer and it came out easy. Problem is the needle bearing assy is still in there, kept in place by the snap ring. My lame snap ring pliers can't get a grip on the snap ring holes. I don't see much harm in leaving them in place. Question is - am I asking for trouble by doing this?

I would pull it out just to be save. Would be a pain if the bearing came apart. Have u tried some flathead screwdrivers to pry the clip out?

The snap ring is pretty far up in the block. Not sure I can get a screw driver on it, but may revisit tonight.

What's left up in the engine is an outer race, needle bearings and a snap ring. There might be a spacer on the balance gear shaft too. I'm pretty confident that without the mass/weight of the balance gear (since I've removed it), the snap ring has no reason to come off. If it did, I think it and the other items would find their way to the bottom of the oil pan - where I have a magnetic drain plug. Even if a needle bearing or snap ring came off and got smacked by the crank while running, I don't think it would open a window on the block like a balance gear flying around in there...

But - I'll try again to get the needle bearing assy out again.

Thanks!
Bill

go on the outside of the block and locate the hole that the balance gear shaft press's into and just pound it out. take the snap ring and bearing off and tap it back in. I usually take a cut off wheel and cut them off near the block so the shaft isn't hanging out there.

Good news - I bought different set of snap ring pliers from NAPA and got the snap ring off and the rest of the balance gear bits out of the engine - yippie!!!

However, it was a trifling experience - close to cursing uncontrollably several times as the new snap ring pliers weren't much better than the old ones I used yesterday.

Now it's time to put the oil pan back on and begin installing this engine in the 126.

Thanks!
Bill

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
