Default rebuilt engine

14 hp k321. freshly rebuilt, starts good and runs good but runs too rich, not so rich it leaves a trail but the spark plug is always sooty, way too rich. I know nothing about the carb. It was the one that was on it when I got the motor. All I did was clean the outside and empty the float bowl, which had nothing in it. Points gaped around .017. Plug gaped at whatever stock was. I've messed with the carb setting screws to no avail. Retorqued the head bolts 5 times now. They seem to be settled down now. I'm just wondering if I should go one more step up in the spark plug heat range ? It has a Champ H10C in it now. Any ideas ?
How do you adjust the throttle cable ? It has a cable retainer clip and a set screw on the other end.

You don't want to raise your heat range. One thing I've noticed from people who rebuild a Kohlershere and there, they don't get the governor adjusted correctly and the throttle opening up all the way. Then they sit and run at half throttle. The rings don't seat in and the carb don't really do its job that well in mid-range. You have a idle adjustment and a full throttle adjustment. everything in between is based off of air correction. So, if you are not turning 3600 or 3800 when you adjust you really aren't doing much. .017 on the point gap is to tight. set it at .020. plug gap .020. to many people take plugs out of the box and don't even look at them . also make sure your choke is opening all the way. adjust that cable if its not,

Thanks, I've covered all the basic adjustments. Carb is working ok at any rpm, loaded or not, it behaves ok. Idles right down nice and doesn't fowl out idling and everything is/seems adjusted right, checked and rechecked. There is no noticable smoke at any rpm & it doesn't seem to use excessive amounts of gas. I took the carb off, drained it, flipped it over and did a vacuum test on the needle & seat, no leakage. I added some fuel system cleaner to the gas tank. I went ahead with the next hotter plug. The Champ 12, it had a 10 in it and it seems somewhat better with the #12 in it, not perfect, still looks a little rich. It doesn't matter where in the operating range/loaded or not, shut it off and the plug will still look rich. I know I should probably rebuild the carb and sterilize everything, put some new parts in it. It's just strange, like it's not getting the right vacuum signal but the motor is strong now. It's one of those things that everyone has had a hand in it before it came here.

As stated before, the gap is too tight. I will only assume you are using the factory ignition stuff, which may be contributing to the rich condition. My question is when you say you messed with the carb settings "to no avail". Does that mean there was no change? Or it changed but did not fix the problem?

If it needs a coil, thats one problem. If there is no change with the carb adjustment screws, that means there is an air leak.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
