Question How much to pay?

I recently bought a Cub 149, with deck, thrower, and blade with chains for $500. The seller also threw in a 129 with weights and chains, but NO motor. Now I'm looking for an engine for this. What I've determined is that the motor in the 149 is the motor from the 129, a 12 HP Kohler. So, I'm still short an engine, and they seem to be hard to find in Michigan. What should I plan on spending for an engine, either a 12 HP or a 14 HP? Can somebody give me a ballpark price? I appreciate any help that I can get, Thanks in advance!

rogermay77, I know a guy in Olivet MI that has an engine out of a 147 that he says runs good. I think he is asking 300.00 for it complete I believe. Let me know and I can get you his number on the private email.

rogermay77, I've been intrigued by this on ebay for awhile. Don't know anything about them, and not related in any way, but they seem to have good feedback. If I needed a "new" engine for my 149, I'd be tempted to try this as it seems like a fair price.

Im sorry, i flat out refuse the say thats a resonable price! thats more than ive paid for 3 of my cubs! be patient look for a good used running engine, ive had people call me trying to sell me engines complete and running for $250-$200 and i turned them down because i thought that was too high, in retraspect those prices were probably reasonable but im cheep lol... that one on ebay would still need a head, flywheel, and all the tins, thats another $50-$100 right there.... i guess when it comes down to it its your money and if you want to blow it on something like that go for it, it is a nice engine... looks like quality work and should last a long time but even if you find a running smokey engine you can rebuild it for $100 as long as it doesnt need bored.

Just some suggestions....

I live not too terribly far from the Company in Minerva Ohio that lists on Ebay thet was just mentioned. I have spoken too them on the phone and they seem to be VERY credible. They do ALL machine work at their shop and build both stock and pulling engines. I am not currently in need of any engine work, but will use them when the need arises.

I have never found a smoking motor that doesn't need bored. I know a few owners that tried the hone/ring job....They did a major rebuild 2-3 years later. I've been working on small motors 35 plus years. If you take the time to measure the cylinder wall like Kohler wants you to measure it you will find out it will be close to being out of spec before hone the cylinder. It will be out of spec the majority of the time after you hone it.

A comeplete running motor for $200 to $250 is a good price for a 14-16 horse power motor.

As far as I'm concern you are blowing your money on a $100 rebuild job.

Default patience..

I'm from Mi too..I'm always on the lookout for an extra Cub or 2, but this time of year, pickin's are pretty slim..in a couple of months, they'll be more plentiful..spruce up the running one, and get the other one ready for an engine..you'll find one before ya know it!!!..Good Luck..just my 2 cents....

Default 149 engine

WOW, thanks for all the input! The varied opinions gives me new insight to what I'm doing. If I can get the number to the guy in Olivet, I'm interested in what he has. Send me a number at rogermay77@yahoo.com, Thanks!!!

Rogermay77.....you could also get in touch with Joe's Outdoor Power Shop, he's all over E-Bay with cubs and I think that he has a 14hp coming his way. A guy that I buy parts off of sent him about 7 or 8 cubs and will be sending another 4 or so soon and I think that at least one of them might be a 14 hp engine, but you need to contact him before he strips it down and sells it for parts!!! Hope that helps or that you find a 14hp somewhere!!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
