PTO belts not likely a cause - just noticed with the sides off one was a little slack - not getting full power transfer to the deck. Temp showed the slacker was a lot hotter.

I wonder what temp the oil is because if your oil is that hot I would think it would start to have thermal breakdown. If you look into any of the Harley Davidson sites they cover problems like this too. Maybe shoot the oil filter with the IR to see how hot the oil is.

Broke down and spent $8.46 for matched PTO belts. They now run at 137 and matched in temp. Overall run temp is down 15 degrees at 246 (also was cooler ambient ). Oil filter at 225 close to max on the Harley Davidson site. Still can hear the blades slow down in 5 in. grass (my 1650 will mow a field with no change).

If the blades are slowing down and the engine is not then the belts are slipping. You need to see if it is the PTO belts or the deck belt.

Shortened the vacuum to PTO belt tension link by 1/4 - improved tip speed in tall grass. Still think this Vanguard runs hot - will see what happens in time.
