Strange new cub in the corral
I found a yellow and white 16HP 582 on Craig’s list that the PO wanted $275 for. Never having dealt with anything but earlier Cubs I was a bit apprehensive about it. It was about two hours away, but I thought I ought to check it out. When I got there I walked around it trying to decide what I could scrounge off it to the betterment of the rest of my Cubs. It had chains and 75LB weights on each of the extra wide tires. The front tires looked new. Around back it had a class 0 three point hitch. The seat was without rips. I was disappointed to find a different rear end under it than I was used to, but finding it had a creeper gear helped. The engine turned but the PO said it didn't run. I offered $200 and the PO took it. That was a week ago and today I got it fired up. It runs smooth with only 528 hr on a running clock. I only have three things to solve 1,The clutch is stuck tight and will not release, 2. It's missing the side engine covers, and 3. now it runs so good I don't want to bust it up for parts. While I was there I bought a craftsman 2 with a horizontal shaft 18 hp 4 spd. high and low for $50 in case the 582s engine didn't run. I've been using it for dirty work around here all week. So anyone have any engine covers they want to sell?

Congrats on a great deal. The side covers are an easy find and the rear cat 0 is worth over $300 alone. I like the oldies too but once you start working and driving the 82 series they won't look as good. Lets see some pictures now.

Progress
Update! Pulled the clutch out and did a quick junkyard rebuild. Everything was good just seized up from sitting. Heard from one of the members with a fair price on the side panels. Took it out for a ride though the woods and it wasn't lacking in power or traction. Does need a seat though The one that came with it is from a Box store unit. I'll get some pictures up as soon as I take a few minutes to figure out how to post them here. I'm sure it's easy.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
