Found an Onan for my 982
Hello
Well after nearly 5 years I finally found a replacement Onan for my 982. The po said that the engine runs fine but it smokes and has had sitting in storage for a few years he said it was cheaper for the linamar block than to rebuild. I know the rings need replacing but should I replace the piston and connecting rod ? What else should I need to replace? Thanks for any help

Look for a 2000 series Cub with a Command engine in it and replace that Onan...All the JD guys are doing that since they are obsolete now....I did it to 3 of them...
You are looking at approx. 1100 to 1500 for a total rebuild..

J, if you get the Onan I would change the rods and pistons but as Randy said it may be cheaper to do the Kohler swap.
I have not purchased anything from these guys but they seem to have a good selection of parts. http://onanparts.com/ Here is a good link on a rebuild. http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=91204 Good luck and take lots of pictures for us.
