Default Kohler K-321AQS ?'s

hello guy's

I have some questions for you
today I pulled the head on my 1450 , thinking the head gasket was bad .
when I was taking the head off I found the bolts (5 out of nine ) was pretty loose ! when I opened it up I found the cyl bore had an egg shape on one side. so I guess it will need rebuilt. first question is ,on the piston it is stamped ( SID) is this standard inside dia??

also what is a ballpark figure for a rebuild for a kohler k321?

a local small engine shop has a k321 that has been rebuilt sitting in his shop and is asking $350 for it . I don't know to what extent the rebuild is but looking on ebay at used stuff it sounds pretty cheap!

surprisingly my tractor starts and runs good at idle , but from half to full throttle it starts missing and laboring ... is this because carb is out of adjustment or is it because it loses compression ?

guys, I don't know much about these small engines so any in put is welcome

if 5 bolts were loose you had a leaking head gasket, sounds like your bore is worn out, there could be carb issues or ignition issues to. to me $350 don't sound like much of a rebuild, if its a dealer I'd expect the price to be in the 5 to 700 range depending on there labor rate for a good rebuild.

Maybe he was quoting his labor and not parts or machining.

well I went and looked at the rebuilt engine today , and it's a k321 AS.. NOT an AQS!
too many things look different (mainly the dipstick location ) for me to pull the trigger on it !
no he wants $350 and someone else (he trusts) rebuilt it ! it has a carb (that seems to have a tight throttle shaft ),and starter .

now I'm thinking I should spend the money on rebuilding the one I have but I just don't trust myself to do it !

I don't have the tools to do the machine work either !

also is the carb the same on a k321 & k341? I have seen some for a 341 on ebay for only $53 .
are there good and bad (cheap) carbs ? I want to save some money but don't want junk!

a 14 use's a #30 15/16 venturi a 16 use's a #30 1 in venturi . you can get throttle shaft kits and rebuild kits for them.

There are very few people that have the tools needed for machine work but if you find a good machine shop near you they can measure everything when you get it apart. Look in resources and you will find the Kohler k series rebuild manual with everything you need information wise. Its a good feeling to do it yourself and I'm sure the machine shop will advise you as well as many people here in reference to putting it back together.

We'll be happy to give advice as/if you have questions along the way.

Depending on where you are in Kansas- maybe there is a list member whom might help.

Take it slow, print out the manual and read it a few times- disassembly and assembly. Nothing needs to be forced..
