Default K181 govenor shaft ?

I'm a little embarrassed to ask but I disassembled this K181 months ago and upon reassembly today I found a small sleeve less than 1/2 in long that I placed in the govenor assembly Baggie during disassembly. Looks as if it could possibly be a govenor shaft spacer either fore or aft of the govenor gear. I can't recall making any notice of this during disassembly and frankly I'm stumped. Any insight/expertise is greatly appreciated. Thanks

You may want to post a pic of it. I'm sure someone know what it's for and where it goes. I hate it when I have left over parts.

Thanks- no internal washer on the govenor shaft. Copper washer on the long screw that holds it in place. Bought a new govenor gear and thrust washer but kohler instructions said not to use govenor gear washer with k181. Am I missing another washer somewhere? Thanks again

Question

I wish I knew a lot about these engines. Looking at a k161 and k181 and their defining properties, you can compare the basic differences between the two. Having said that, I would then refer to the Kohler Engine Service Manual for proper installation, and installation parts requirements. Having more trust here in the manual than in the instructions provided with the new parts. Just my opinion of where I would begin if it were my problem.

Hope you can nail it, and share the experience! Good luck!

When working with engines, you ALWAYS go with whatever instructions came with the part. Part will change, switch manufacturers, or get updated. Manuals, seldom do. The RARELY reprint a manual with changes. Always follow instructions with new parts.

Lew is correct with the location and I believe he was referring to the washer that goes with the brass sleeve. Look at the parts blowout of the governor..... Here: Governor. It's number 24.

It's a good thing to know. Updated service information is a tough thing to keep track of. Just like most anyone, I use a manual like it is the machines bible. But sometimes, there is new information that you just aren't aware of. It's a good thing to always read the info on new parts. If for no other reason than just to make sure a procedure or torque spec hasn't changed. Seen that a lot too, updated parts with a new torque spec.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
