Even if the stock clutch setup was "ok" for novelty use, why would a person put countless hours of design, engineering, fabricating...etc to build a sweet looking articulating tractor with a 50 hp diesel if he couldnt count on it having the pulling power of a small tank? The clutch is a very important variable in that equation. From my experience, with 100 lbs wheel weights on each tire, i have wore out a stock clutch in a short period of time pulling large loads of firewood. Jonathan is correct on this one.

Thank you sgirdham, if you are wearing out stock clutches pulling loads of firewood that is all the proof that I need. The heaviest work this tractor will be doing will be in the woods. Mostly dragging trailers loaded with wood. Maybe a rare case of dragging a log. What I've learned through studying Cub Cadets would lead me to a agree that a stock clutch is good up to about 20 hp. My sole reason for running a manual trans is to get as much HP to wheels. I don't expect to use the full 50 hp, chances are I could run a lesser engine, if I had one. Thank you to all, this thread and some private conversations have helped me answer some more technical questions about stock clutch limitations.
I don't have to worry about any class restrictions in the woods so there is no reason for me to risk dragging a dead machine out of wood with a blown clutch.
