Just tossing this out for thought. Has anyone looked at replacing the OEM box with something else? It would seem that there has to be something better that could made to fit? If one of you can get me dimensions, rotation, shaft size etc I'll dig around and see what I can find. Some good close up pics of the box and how they mount would also help.

No rush, at least for me. I don't do snow blowers. I'm a plow guy. Just bored and figure if I can find a replacement I'll do it.

I'm going through the gear box rebuild as we speak. I needed new gears which one of our members was graciously able to provide. I just tore down the gear box tonight and decided to replace the bearings and seals while I'm in the process. I called my local auto parts store and they told me to bring in the bearings and they could order them by using the bearing and seal dimensions. I'll work with them tomorrow and post the results/part numbers of the bearings and seals as soon as I can.
Steve.

The tiller and snow thrower boxes are similar, and take the same bearings and seals, but gear ratios vary, from 2:1 to 1.5:1. There's a chart somewhere. The box from the 482, 582S, and 1100 is completely different, and is a 1:1. Here is my thread, I hope I'm not too late.

Haven't forgotten about this thread I made, just haven't really gotten anywhere One of our members graciously sold me a complete "new" gearbox for a fair price so as soon as time allows, I'm going to get the gearboxes switched out. When I do, I'm going to open the old one for sh!ts and giggles and I'll be sure to post pics when I do

I know I'm a little late to this party, but I did just rebuild the gear box on my friends JD 49 snowthrower. Bearings were not "pressed" in? They were what I call a "light press fit". That is to say I knocked them out (and back in) with a hammer and brass punch.
"C" clips held the shafts and gears in place. JD still offered his gears and bearings, just not the shafts. Luckily one of our co workers had a box with a broken gear, and between the two we had two good shafts. He bought everything he could from the JD dealer, bearings, seals, c clips and cover gasket. His parts bill was over $300.00. When it failed, he called me. We pulled it apart and thougth it was just one broken gear, when we pulled it out of the parts washer, it was obvious it needed EVERYTHING! (but its a JD, so no real surprize there!) The skematic for the JD, looked identical to the one for the cub. On to SamMac's point, the gearbox on my (now sdhdcouple's) QA36A has (2) shafts, a drive and a driven (one has a pulley, the other hooks to the driveshaft). The gearbox on my H42 Haban, has (3) shafts. (1) with a pulley, (1) with the driveshaft (for the auger) and another with nothing? That one is directly opposite the one for the driveshaft? This gearbox, was used on multiple implements, I'm pretty darn sure. |

Well, I finally got the new gearbox on the QA and it works GREAT! As for the old, well, I obviously removed it and snapped a few pics in the process. It looks like a new bearing would have fixed it since the gears seem to be in good shape, but too late for that now. The input shaft seems to have worn a grove in it but nothing that I think would have really hampered performance. I think, though I could be wrong, that the grove is simply the snap ring grove a bit more worn which wouldn't necessarily be detrimental to the gearbox.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
