Well more tinkering with the 149 s/g. The ammeter does bounce between charge & discharge. I started the tractor and felt the s/g as it ran. One side of it is heating up, the other side is much cooler. I don't know much about s/g's, but I think that there are 2 field coils, under the bis countersunk screws on the sides. It is under one of these screws that the heat is being generated. Maybe one coil is shorted?

Inside there are 2 fields, the one with the heavy wire is the starter, the one fine the smaller wire is the generator. I had the same problem with mine, mine was bouncing and getting hot. The Gen field was shorted, and after I replaced the S/G with a brand new one it fixed the problem.

Thanks Pat, I thought there were 2 coils inside of it. I am going to take it to the local elec repair shop Monday to see how much it will cost me to repair it.
