Default Helicoiling an Aluminum Oil Pan--Easy!

I decided to take a few pictures of the process of installing helicoils in an aluminum oil pan.

Buy the 3/8-16 NC kit to get the tap, installation tool, and an assortment of inserts. You'll use the 3/4 inch long inserts.

Drill the holes out with the supplied drill bit on a drill press. Set the depth stop to avoid drilling too deep!

Tap the holes with the supplied tap, using a suitable tapping fluid. It's aluminum, so it goes very easily.

Thread in the inserts, and knock out the tangs at the bottom of the insert with the supplied pin and a hammer. Last pics of the tang. (not mandatory to remove the tang since the bolts don't go past the bottom of the threads.)

Cheaper and easier than finding/buying a cast iron oil pan.

Done!

Nice write up

I want to add a couple points.

STI ( screw thread inserts) / Heli Coils come in two style, free running and self locking. Self locking is preferred but both work well.

When you install the insert, but the end of the tang 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn under the top surface so the insert does not get lifted up.

Nice job Frank. I think I just saw a similar kit at A Auto.

Jeff, I was always told to apply a small amount of red Loctite to the outside obviously of the insert for safe measure. Is that something you would reccommend on this or the other style?

If you do use it, let it fully cure before you put the bolts in in case it seeps thru the insert. It might be a good idea for those folks without a lot of experience installing them.

I've installed literally thousands of helicoils for military spec work and never used Loctite. But we did use the self locking style.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
